{"id":12533,"date":"2026-09-24T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T00:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euro-tv.ro\/news\/just-one-small-serving-of-ultra-processed-food-a-day-linked-to-higher-disease-risk-major-study-finds\/"},"modified":"2026-09-24T00:01:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T00:01:00","slug":"just-one-small-serving-of-ultra-processed-food-a-day-linked-to-higher-disease-risk-major-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euro-tv.ro\/news\/just-one-small-serving-of-ultra-processed-food-a-day-linked-to-higher-disease-risk-major-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Just one small serving of ultra-processed food a day linked to higher disease risk, major study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Just an extra 3.5 ounces of <a href=\"https:\/\/foxnews.com\/food-drink\/americans-ditching-ultra-processed-snacks-ancient-fruit-thats-exploding-popularity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ultra-processed foods<\/a> (UPFs) a day was linked to a higher risk of chronic disease, according to a new large-scale analysis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The study<\/a>, published Sept. 22 in the journal Family Medicine and Community Health, looked at nearly 8.8 million adults who participated in studies across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania, with follow-up periods ranging from two to 32 years.<\/p>\n<p>For every additional 100 grams of UPFs consumed daily, researchers found an association with a 14% higher risk of cardiovascular events, a 4% higher risk of cancer, a 3% higher risk of death from any cause and a 2% higher risk of metabolic syndrome or diabetes, according to a news release.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/5-ultra-processed-foods-may-worse-your-health-than-you-think-expert-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>5 ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS THAT MAY BE WORSE FOR YOUR HEALTH THAN YOU THINK, EXPERT SAYS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>UPFs are typically packaged and convenient, made through extensive industrial processing and often packed with additives. They can include sugary drinks, processed meats, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/meals\/snack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">packaged snacks and candy<\/a>. One hundred grams is about the size of a 3.5-ounce bag of corn chips, a small box of candy or a single-serve cup of mini cookies.<\/p>\n<p>People with the highest intake of UPFs also had higher risks of digestive diseases, depression or anxiety, <a href=\"https:\/\/foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">obesity<\/a>, cancer and cardiovascular events than those with the lowest intake of the foods.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given that UPF-related chronic diseases often cluster as multimorbidity, reducing consumption of UPFs and replacing them with minimally processed alternatives may be relevant for chronic disease prevention and primary care management,&#8221; the researchers, led by Xiao Liu, a cardiologist at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital in China and a research fellow at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, wrote.<\/p>\n<p>These types of foods tend to crowd out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/healthy-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthier, nutrient-dense options<\/a>, according to Kelly Springer, a New York-based registered dietitian and founder of Kelly&#8217;s Choice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/communal-dining-makes-gen-z-comeback-older-guests-push-back-chaotic-trend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not that you can never eat them again,&#8221; Springer, who was not involved in the research, told Fox News Digital. &#8220;It&#8217;s the fact that we are not getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">real foods<\/a> \u2014 real foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, whole grains.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rather than focusing on taking foods away, Springer recommended adding protein and fiber to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/meals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meals<\/a> and snacks.
