He stressed the need to improve <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/mobilization\/\">recruitment<\/a> and psychological support for soldiers and better integrate newcomers from training centers before they undertake combat missions.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/ukrainian-drones-strike-russian-energy-facilities-kyiv-says\/\">intensified<\/a> its long-range drone strikes on Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/ukrainian-drones-attack-oil-refinery-in-russias-volgograd-oblast\/\">oil facilities<\/a> in the past weeks, aiming to disrupt fuel supplies to the Russian military and weaken Moscow&#8217;s energy export revenues. We&#8217;re putting in hundreds of billions of dollars. They have great rare earths. According to Sukharevskyi, Ukraine\u2019s laser system, called Tryzub, can down aircraft at altitudes exceeding 2 kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/unmanned-systems-forces\/\">Unmanned Systems Forces<\/a>, established less than a year ago, already include combat and research units operating across air, land, and sea.<\/p>\n<p>When asked how successful the development of these technologies has been, Sukharevskyi said that the Ukrainian military&#8217;s R&amp;D (Research and Development) &#8220;involves a number of areas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new system was the result of efforts to find an effective countermeasure against Russian aircraft and drones, specifically Shahed-type attack drones, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Kyiv Independent could not immediately verify these claims.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s defense industry has gained momentum since Russia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/russias-invasion\/\">full-scale invasion<\/a> in February 2022. <\/p>\n<p>In late January, the Unmanned Systems Forces said that Ukraine deployed <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/ukraine-deploys-long-range-drone-capable-of-2-000-km-strike-military-says\/\">a long-range drone<\/a> capable of traveling up to 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) and carrying a 250-kilogram air bomb.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-bookmark-card\"><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/transfer-of-air-force-personnel-to-infantry-continues-despite-scandal\/\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"kg-bookmark-content\">\n<div class=\"kg-bookmark-title\">Transfer of Ukrainian Air Force personnel to infantry continues despite scandal<\/div>\n<div class=\"kg-bookmark-description\">The Ukrainian military command\u2019s plan to throw high-skilled Air Force personnel into the infantry was said to be halted when the practice gained nationwide attention, followed by a condemnation from President Volodymyr Zelensky. Hard-line Republicans aligned with President <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/bloomberg-top-republicans-say-ukraine-aid-vote-weeks-away-contradicting-johnsons-shorter-timeline\/\">pressured<\/a> Johnson to block further assistance to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>Even after Congress approved the funding, <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/us-assistance-to-ukraine\/\">U.S. military aid<\/a> to Ukraine remained inconsistent, Reuters reported, citing sources in Washington and Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>By November 2024, Ukraine had received only half of the military aid the U.S. had promised for that year from existing <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/pentagon\/\">Pentagon<\/a> stockpiles. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine is alarmed over a sharp rise in executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by Russian forces, according to a press release obtained by the Kyiv Independent on Feb. 3.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 79 such executions in 24 separate incidents have been recorded by the mission since the end of August 2024. Presumably, some of these incidents concern group executions.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian authorities have documented widespread violations of the Geneva Conventions by Russia during the war. Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/articles\/2024\/12\/18\/7489582\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> in an interview with Ukrainska Pravda that as of mid-December 2024, Kyiv had recorded the execution of 177 captured Ukrainian soldiers, with 109 of them last year.<\/p>\n<p>The U.N. mission interviewed witnesses and analyzed videos and photos published by <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/ukraine\/\" rel=\"dofollow\">Ukrainian<\/a> and Russian sources showing killings or dead bodies of Ukrainian <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/prisoners-of-war\/\" rel=\"dofollow\">POWs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The mission also said it had documented the execution of an injured and incapacitated \u2014 but not yet captured \u2014 Russian soldier by the Ukrainian army in 2024. Kyiv has not commented on this report.<\/p>\n<p>Many Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered or were in the custody of the <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/russian-armed-forces\/\" rel=\"dofollow\">Russian forces<\/a> were shot dead on the spot, according to the statement.
