His comments were met with backlash, particularly from Wicker, who speculated on their origins, saying, &#8220;I don\u2019t know who wrote the speech \u2014 it is the kind of thing Tucker Carlson could have written, and Carlson is a fool.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wicker said he was surprised by Hegseth\u2019s initial remarks but heartened by his partial reversal. &#8220;Everybody knows \u2026 and people in the administration know you don&#8217;t say before your first meeting what you will agree to and what you won&#8217;t agree to,&#8221; Wicker added, noting that he found Hegseth\u2019s statements puzzling and disturbing. And Ukraine is entitled to the promises that the world made to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump, however, denied being aware of Wicker\u2019s criticism from within his own party. When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/live-blog\/live-updates-trump-tariffs-ukraine-russia-rcna191174\/rcrd73098?canonicalCard=true\">asked about it on Feb. 14<\/a>, he said: &#8220;Roger is a very good friend of mine, and Pete is obviously, he\u2019s been doing a great job. I haven\u2019t heard.&#8221; He added, &#8220;I\u2019ll speak to Roger. I\u2019ll speak to Pete.
