Actual casualties from the attack are still being clarified, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv Independent journalists in the capital heard multiple explosions throughout the night as air defenses worked in the city.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/kpszsu\/34546\"><strong>Air Force<\/strong><\/a> said it intercepted 88 drones, while 128 others vanished from radars, likely used as decoys to overwhelm air defenses. This would be crushing for Russia because they&#8217;re having a hard time now with the economy, oil prices are low.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump said he believes a deal won&#8217;t be possible without his involvement and expressed plans to meet with Putin soon, adding: &#8220;I have a very good relationship with Putin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/lavrov-rubio-discuss-us-russia-contact-following-istanbul-talks-russian-media-reports\/\"><strong>held a phone call<\/strong><\/a> on May 17, reportedly initiated by the U.S., to discuss bilateral relations and recent peace talks in Istanbul, Russian state media said.<\/p>\n<p>Lavrov welcomed what he called Washington&#8217;s &#8220;constructive&#8221; role in encouraging Kyiv to accept Putin&#8217;s proposal to resume talks. Rubio reportedly praised the 1,000-for-1,000 POW exchange and ongoing efforts to define ceasefire terms.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-embed-card\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3RBIf7ynDQM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen title=\"Putin no-show at peace talks and new Russian offensive | Ukraine This Week\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"russia-plans-training-launch-of-yars-intercontinental-ballistic-missile-overnight-on-may-19-ukraines-hur-claims\"><code>Russia plans 'training' launch of Yars intercontinental ballistic missile overnight on May 19, Ukraine's HUR claims<\/code><\/h2>\n<p>Russia is planning a &#8220;training&#8221; launch of an RS-24 <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/russia-to-launch-rs-24-yars-intercontinental-ballistic-missile-ukraines-military-intelligence-claims\/\"><strong>intercontinental ballistic missile<\/strong><\/a> overnight on May 19, Ukraine&#8217;s military intelligence (HUR) reported on May 18.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/DIUkraine\/5892\"><strong>agency<\/strong><\/a>, the missile will be equipped with a &#8220;training&#8221; warhead, and the move is intended to intimidate <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/ukraine\/\"><strong>Ukraine<\/strong><\/a>, as well as EU and NATO member states.<\/p>\n<p>The launch is set to take place near the village of Svobodny in Sverdlovsk Oblast, roughly 100 kilometers northeast of Yekaterinburg, according to HUR.<\/p>\n<p>The agency did not specify what the potential target of a possible attack might be.<\/p>\n<p>Yars, or RS-24, is a strategic solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile system adopted by <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/russia\/\"><strong>Russia<\/strong><\/a> in 2009. (The Kyiv Independent)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the new comments, Putin said a priority is securing Russian-speaking populations in territories Russia claims as its own \u2014 a reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/crimea\/\"><strong>Crimea<\/strong><\/a> and the partially occupied Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson oblasts.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin declared its <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/russia-annexes-4-ukrainian-oblasts-after-staged-referendums\/\"><strong>annexation<\/strong><\/a> of the four regions in 2022 after sham referenda, despite not fully controlling any of them.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow also <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/as-russia-sticks-to-hardline-demands-during-peace-talks-europe-frustrated-with-trumps-swerves-bloomberg-reports\/\"><strong>insisted<\/strong><\/a> Ukraine abandon NATO ambitions, forgo reparations, and accept a neutral status with no foreign military support \u2014 demands Kyiv has categorically rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Despite initiating the Istanbul talks, the Kremlin dispatched only <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/who-is-vladimir-medinsky-the-putin-aide-leading-russias-delegation-at-ukraine-peace-talks\/\"><strong>mid-level officials<\/strong><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/volodymyr-zelensky\/\"><strong>Zelensky<\/strong><\/a> had called on Putin to attend personally, stressing that only the Russian president could authorize a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv and European governments continue to push for an <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/eu-officially-endorses-unconditional-30-day-ceasefire-between-ukraine-and-russia\/\"><strong>unconditional truce<\/strong><\/a>, which Ukraine accepted in March. Over the course of four days, the festival offers a number of discussion panels, book presentations,<\/div>\n<div class=\"kg-bookmark-metadata\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"kg-bookmark-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.kyivindependent.com\/content\/images\/size\/w256h256\/format\/png\/2023\/03\/K-new.svg\" alt=\"Ukraine war latest: Russia launches record 273-drone attack on Ukraine ahead of planned Trump-Putin call\"><span class=\"kg-bookmark-author\">The Kyiv Independent<\/span><span class=\"kg-bookmark-publisher\">Kate Tsurkan<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"kg-bookmark-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euro-tv.ro\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2154810589-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ukraine war latest: Russia launches record 273-drone attack on Ukraine ahead of planned Trump-Putin call\"><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"ukraines-47th-brigade-battalion-commander-resigns-slams-military-leadership-over-stupid-objectives\"><code>Ukraine's 47th Brigade battalion commander resigns, slams military leadership over 'stupid objectives'<\/code><\/h2>\n<p>Oleksandr Shyrshyn, battalion commander of the 47 Separate Mechanized Brigade, has <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/battalion-commander-of-the-47th-brigade-submits-resignation-report-slams-military-leadership-over-stupid-tasks\/\"><strong>submitted his resignation<\/strong><\/a>, sharply criticizing Ukraine&#8217;s military leadership for what he described as senseless orders and unnecessary casualties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have never received more stupid objectives than in the current direction,&#8221; Shyrshyn wrote in a blunt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/a.shyrshyn\/posts\/pfbid0ojq9XcHGkifQsdUEkkE7xGSqtikvqEe1uHESdCFykseHz1R6DvfeD1k9RS1eiNWkl\"><strong>Facebook post<\/strong><\/a> announcing his decision on May 16. &#8220;Someday I will tell you the details, but the stupid loss of people, trembling in front of a stupid generals, leads to nothing but failures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hope your children will also serve in the infantry and carry out your orders,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s General Staff initiated an <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/ukraines-general-staff-vows-review-after-brigade-commander-resigns-over-stupid-orders\/\"><strong>internal investigation<\/strong><\/a> on May 18 in response to Shyrshyn&#8217;s accusations.<\/p>\n<p>The Kyiv Independent <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/overcoming-setbacks-nato-trained-brigade-breaches-surovikin-line-in-zaporizhzhia-oblast\/\"><strong>reported<\/strong><\/a> in 2023 that the brigade, which was formed from scratch in 2022 and is often known by the name &#8220;Magura,&#8221; was prepared with the summer 2023 counteroffensive in mind; its soldiers were trained in NATO countries and equipped with superior new Western equipment.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the brigade was engaged in combat operations within Russia&#8217;s Kursk Oblast.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine launched its cross-border incursion into Kursk Oblast in August 2024, marking the first major foreign ground offensive into Russian territory since World War II. The operation sought to delay a planned Russian push into Ukraine&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/sumy-oblast\/\"><strong>Sumy Oblast<\/strong><\/a> and redirect <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/russian-armed-forces\/\"><strong>Russian forces <\/strong><\/a>away from eastern Donetsk Oblast.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow began a major counteroffensive in early March, retaking large portions of territory including the town of Sudzha. Ukrainian forces have since withdrawn from much of the area but still maintain limited control in some zones as of <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/putin-reiterates-recapture-of-kursk-oblast-admits-ukrainian-soldiers-remain\/\"><strong>late April<\/strong><\/a> despite Russia&#8217;s claims that its forces have fully recaptured the territory of the region.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Shyrshyn on May 16 accused the military command of focusing on punishments rather than results. &#8220;All they are capable of is reprimands, investigations, imposition of penalties. Everyone is going to hell,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Political games and assessment of the real state of affairs do not correspond to either reality or possibilities.
