Ceasefire now. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/89XRWZcP21\">pic.twitter.com\/89XRWZcP21<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Keith Kellogg (@generalkellogg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/generalkellogg\/status\/1926674287819133204?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 25, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Russia <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/\">launched 69 missiles and 298 drones<\/a> overnight on May 25, according to Ukraine&#8217;s Air Force. The attack killed 12 people, including three children, and injured more than 60, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has not yet publicly commented on the overnight attacks on May 25.<\/p>\n<p>Following the attack, President Volodymyr Zelensky <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/americas-silence-encourages-putin-zelensky-says-after-massive-russian-attack\/\">called for stronger sanctions<\/a> on Russia and added that &#8220;America\u2019s silence, and the silence of others around the world, only encourages (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump on May 8 said the U.S. would join partners in imposing <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/trump-calls-for-unconditional-ceasefire-committed-to-securing-peace-between-ukraine-russia\/\">&#8220;further sanctions&#8221;<\/a> if Russia does not agree to an unconditional ceasefire. Despite numerous threats, Trump has never followed through on imposing additional sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n<p>European leaders have urged the U.S. to impose additional sanctions on Russia to pressure it toward a ceasefire, with EU leaders threatening and subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/eu-adopts-17th-russia-sanctions-package-targeting-shadow-fleet-hybrid-threats\/\">adopting additional sanctions<\/a> in response to Russia&#8217;s ceasefire rejections.<\/p>\n<p>Following a <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/after-call-with-trump-putin-again-refuses-ceasefire-cites-russias-root-causes-of-war-in-ukraine\/\">two-hour phone call<\/a> with Putin on May 19, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/trump-says-he-will-not-impose-new-sanctions-on-russia\/\">refused<\/a> to adopt additional sanctions on Moscow, despite Putin again rejecting a 30-day ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>On May 20 Axios <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/zelensky-had-to-remind-trump-peace-talks-already-underway-axios-reports\/\">reported<\/a> that European leaders reportedly seemed &#8220;surprised&#8221; that Trump was &#8220;relatively content&#8221; with what he heard from Putin, following a call with European leaders after Trump&#8217;s conversation with Putin.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about potential sanctions against Russia, the U.S. president said he did not think it was a good idea, adding that he believes Putin wants a deal.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times reported on May 20, citing a White House official, that Trump refuses to impose sanctions on Russia as it may <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/trump-refusing-to-adopt-sanctions-against-russia-as-it-would-affect-business-opportunities-with-moscow-nyt-reports\/\">hinder <\/a>future business and trade opportunities with Moscow. <\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Serhii Kyslytsia said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XVSQxruvfbQ\">interview<\/a> aired on May 24 on Ukraine&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/a-power-grab-or-a-weapon-against-russia-ukraines-tv-marathon-explained\/\">national telethon<\/a> that Russia&#8217;s negotiating team in Istanbul has repeatedly stated that &#8220;an unconditional ceasefire is categorically unacceptable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on May 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/lavrov-dismisses-vatican-as-possible-venue-for-russia-ukraine-peace-talks\/\">cast doubt<\/a> on the Vatican as a possible venue for future peace talks with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Imagine the Vatican as a venue for negotiations,&#8221; Lavrov reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/moscow-wont-allow-russian-speakers-ukraine-remain-under-rule-zelenskiys-junta-2025-05-23\/\">said<\/a> during a speech at the Diplomatic Academy in Moscow. \u201cIt would be a bit inelegant for Orthodox countries to use a Catholic platform to discuss issues on how to remove the root causes (of the war).&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-bookmark-card\"><a class=\"kg-bookmark-container\" href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/russia-just-said-it-doesnt-want-peace-this-is-what-you-need-to-do\/\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"kg-bookmark-content\">\n<div class=\"kg-bookmark-title\">Editorial: Russia just said it doesn\u2019t want peace in Ukraine.
